公元618年，唐代设铁利府，沿革至今。铁力曾是东北抗日根据地之一，是一座英雄城市，这里留下了赵尚志、李兆麟等抗联将领战斗的足迹。铁力区域内有中国第一个建立的林业局，是林业英雄马永顺生活工作的地方。作为一座移民小城，闯关东文化、东北抗联文化、知青文化、林区生态文化以及汉满回朝等多民族文化的相互交融，形成了开放包容、多元并存的地域文化，铸造了铁力勇于拼搏、永不言败的“骊马精神”。
